Registering for 2FA & Self-Service Password reset

Modified on Fri, 01 Mar 2024 at 01:39 PM

This is a brief guide on how to set up 2-factor authentication & enable your account for self service password reset.

All users of the schools IT system are required to set this up in order to access the school IT system from outside of school.

If you require any assistance at any step of this process, please pop into IT Support (3L23) with your Mobile Phone when you can or arrange a set time for us to assist by emailing ITServiceDesk@kenstimpson.org.uk

Steps:

Register your device

  1. If you wish to register in advance of the enforcement date, you can do so by going to https://aka.ms/mfasetup - Or click this button on the student portal

  2. When first logging on to Office 365 from outside of school, you'll be prompted for more information.

  3. On the next screen, you are asked to start the keep your account secure setup.
You need to pick two methods of verification. The first must be either an authentication app (In this case the Microsoft one) or a call/text to a phone number.

Text's can only be recieved by Mobile phones, calls can be recieved to landlines.

  4. To select a different method, click on the "I want to set up a different method" text towards the bottom of the page

  5. You can then choose a different verification method.

Note:- If you pick "Phone" & choose to be called, you'll recieve a phonecall with a message stating to press the "Pound" key - On UK phones this is the # (Hash) key.

  6. Once you have verified your first method, you will be prompted to setup your second method.
This can be either of the two methods above (Whichever you've not setup) but you can also opt to use security questions, or an email address.

Again, to choose a different method click on the "I want to set up a different method" button

Note:- The email address can not be your school (@kscs.org.uk) as this will fail to go through.

  7. That's it - You're done! You'll see a screen that looks similar to the below

  8. From now on when accessing the system externally you'll be required to approve your login via one of your choosen methods.
When inside school or on a school loaned laptop you won't need to do this.
